Pickleball, like other racquet sports, involves frequent and sudden changes in direction. These repetitive movements can place stress on the ankles. The bones of the ankles are held together by ligaments, which are strong bands of fibrous tissue. If the stress placed on the ligaments is excessive, they can become injured or sprained. When one endures this type of injury they may experience a twisting or rolling of the ankle, feel sudden pain, and have difficulty bearing weight. Depending on the severity of the injury, the individual may feel a tearing or popping sensation. The area may appear swollen and bruised. An ankle sprain is an injury to the ligaments that attach bones. An ankle strain is an injury to the muscle or tendon attached to the bone. There are three grades of sprains. A grade 1 sprain is mild and involves stretching of the ligaments, and a grade 2 sprain is moderate and involves partial tearing of ligaments. The most severe is a grade 3 sprain and involves complete tearing of the ligaments. If you feel you have sprained your ankle playing pickleball and the pain does not improve with a temporary cessation of the activity, it is strongly suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.

Dealing With High Ankle Sprains

Sprains are one of the most common ankle injuries, especially affecting athletes and people who are otherwise physically active. The majority of these injuries involve a lateral ligament in the ankle joint and are caused by the foot rolling over and a ligament overstretching. Another, more serious, ankle sprain is termed a syndesmotic, or high ankle, sprain. This involves the tissue in the front of the ankle, called the anterior tibiofibular ligament. Such an injury makes it impossible to walk or flex the foot and is extremely painful. In most cases, surgery is the only option for treatment and can involve months of staying off the injured foot. One of the main risks of incurring a syndesmotic ankle sprain is participating in high-impact sports such as soccer, basketball, tennis, and trail running. Other risks include having had a previous ankle sprain, being obese, and starting a sports activity after being sedentary for a long time. If you have such an ankle sprain, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who will examine the joint, conduct multiple tests, and offer appropriate treatment options.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Podiatry Services . Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

People who are 65 years old or older have increased chances of incurring a fall. A common reason this can happen may be a result of decreasing body strength as aging happens. A good fall prevention technique can include implementing a gentle exercise routine that can increase cardiovascular and muscle strength. Falling can have serious consequences, and may affect the feet. A broken ankle or toe may cause pain and difficulty in completing daily activities. Research has shown there are several thousand seniors who live independently, and many falls can occur in the home. Fall prevention strategies can include removing worn rugs from the living area, and it is helpful to improve lighting in the main areas of the household. Many people choose to have grab bars installed in the shower and toilet area, and it is beneficial to use a non-slip bath mat. If you would like to have additional knowledge about effective fall prevention techniques, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can help you with methods that can protect the feet.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with one of our podiatrists from Podiatry Services . Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Poison Rashes and the Feet

Having a rash on the feet can occur for several reasons. Poison ivy, oak, and sumac are common causes of rashes on the feet and often result in severe itching, blisters, and pain. They are caused by contact with an oily sap, called urushiol, that is found in some plants, possibly causing a rash to develop within 12 to 72 hours after contact. Some of these can clear up within three weeks. Treating any itching is suggested to prevent scratching and possible infection. If an individual has a serious reaction to these poisons, difficulty in breathing may ensue and it is critical to see a medical care provider as soon as possible. Prevention tips for poison rashes on the feet include wearing closed-toed shoes while outside in nature where the feet might possibly be exposed to troublesome plants. If one gets this type of rash, it will be less severe if washed with soap and water immediately and the clothes and shoes involved are disinfected. Since there are other causes of rashes on the feet and symptoms can be similar, if you have developed such a rash and you are experiencing foot pain, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist to have your condition diagnosed and properly treated.
